After 35+ years in business, including C-suite leadership roles and my recent years as a consultant and trainer, I have learned that the real value of training is not measured by what happens in the classroom, but by what happens afterwards.
The missing link between training and performance lies in three principles:
- Less theory, more application.
Learning is far more effective when concepts are kept concise and the focus shifts to practice.
- Design learning experiences, not just training sessions.
Engagement, interaction and real-life application transform knowledge into capability through discussions, role plays, simulations, case studies and feedback.
- Align managers with the learning journey.
Managers should experience the learning, model the desired behaviours and have the coaching skills to reinforce them every day.
Training alone does not change organizations. Managers who reinforce learning do.
Sustainable performance comes when learning becomes part of the way leaders lead and teams work.
